About the artist

Melody is a representational artist, painting what she sees with the idea that her paintings will be more beautiful than reality. She paints from life, setting up the still life and painting the light. When painting landscapes she paints plein air, painting a study of the landscape and returning to her studio using small paintings and photographs as her guide to accurately capture the light. As a young girl she was inspired by her grandmother who gave her oil paints and canvas, then set up a still life on the kitchen table. That fascination with the still life composition remains and is her favorite thing to paint. She has studied with several regional and international artists. At every level of understanding she has a personal commitment to excellence, striving to be the best that she can be. Eight years ago, she began teaching others to 'see', using chiaroscuro - light and shadow, in the Old Masters Style. She teaches classes from her studio, workshops at various locations in the southeast and at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Her paintings are noted for their light and color.
